Greedy Starlings & Shy Squirrels

As my eye's improve Junior Robin has a problem with one of his. I went into the shed today and was unhappy to notice he has a very poorly looking eye. I have taken a picture so you can see what I mean,

I have noticed over the last few day's that Junior spends quite some time on the suet balls, it did cross my mind that maybe he was on there when Mrs Woodpecker arrived, could it be possible that she had a jab at him? Or has he just caught an infection? I suppose it is something I will never know there could be several reasons. I hope he gets better soon!

The garden is still full of young Starlings demanding food, I felt for one Starling in particular ,

The Starling had been trying to keep up with feeding, the young one behind her with it's beak wide open had given her a few nasty pecks, so she picked up the biggest raisin I had ever seen and pushed it so far down the throat of the young starling, I just thought yes that will teach it. The young starling gulped a few times coughed up the raisin then flew to the other side of the garden. I couldn't help it I had to laugh, It made me think of a parent with a stroppy teenager, who couldn't have their own way going off to sulk.

The Squirrel babies are still very shy one of them came to the garden but didn't stay instead he/she chose to sit up in the sycamore tree waiting for me to leave the shed before venturing into the garden properly to eat the food and play.

Tomorrow Tony and I will be going to watch Lynsey running the 10k race for life  (weather permitting) at Temple Newsam, it is the 3rd year she has entered and I am very proud of her for doing it.

Eureka!

The new nut-box has been used, and here are two photo's to prove it.

Miss Squirrel in the box
Miss Squirrel leaving box with a nut in her mouth

She even managed to leave the box lid up, she spent the next couple of hours rushing from garden to garden burying the nuts. I am sure the neighbours will be pleased! The photo's were taken from the bedroom window so they are not very good but at least it shows that the box is in use. Tony is happy now.
I spent a short time in the garden earlier today I took a few pictures but not many, I took one of Junior Robin after his bath, he was drying off on Tony's tripod.

The only other pictures I took were more hungry Starlings demanding to be fed...

The rest of my time is spent reading at the moment. I am reading a book called " Thanks for the memories" written by Cecelia Ahern. This is the fifth book I have read by her and I have enjoyed them all, I have one more of her books left to read, then I will have to find another author I like.
I am quite easy to please where reading is concerned I can read most things, with having short term memory problems I will be able to read the books I have just read in a couple of months and not remember them anyway.
Tonight we will be watching England play Italy at football, I don't know why?
Tomorrow the Olympic Torch comes through Wakefield, I don't think I will be watching that! I know I could go and take some pictures but the thought of the crowds, all those people pushing and shoving no thank you I will stay at home I wont even watch it on TV. I have no interest in the Olympic Games at all.

Nut-boxes And a Tragedy...

Things have been a bit busy in the garden, Tony bought a new strimmer, he has cut the grass twice since the grass has grown so fast with the crazy weather we are having.
One day it is glorious sun so hot it is cracking the flags, the next the rain is pouring and I am back in my thermals!
The pigeons are still trying to take over so the hand clapping is still on going, the Sparrows are growing in numbers, Robin Junior has been joined by another Junior from a different Robin family so we have had a couple of scuffles between families. The Starlings are also increasing. We had a tragedy with a Starling chick! I think the chick jumped the gun a bit on leaving the nest, I think it left a bit too soon. The chick could not fly properly, so it would run around the garden, mum or dad would come and feed, but I knew it didn't look good. The chick kept hiding in a patch of grass that Tony had not cut right next to the wall, so it was out of sight a lot of the time but I could hear it calling out to it's parents. The parents kept coming trying to encourage it to fly to go with them, but it just couldn't do it. As evening drew in, one parent came and fed the chick then nudged it into the lavender bush as if it was putting it to bed. I just knew that by morning that chick would not be there.
When I went to bed I looked out next doors cat was on the wall looking at the ground near the lavender bush, I called Tony while opening the window, the cat saw me and ran, The chick was safe for now but I could not watch all night and I knew the cat would be back.
The following morning the first thing I did was look outside, there next to the sparrow bush was a pile of feathers, the Starling chick had escaped the cat but it had not escaped the Sparrowhawk!

 Baby Starling.

The Squirrels nut-box was beginning to look a bit tatty and needed some repairs, Tony said he would mend it. He also said he would build a new one. Lovely I thought the Squirrels will appreciate that just as much as I will.
Tony got to work mended the old box, set about making a new one, it didn't  take him long and it looked really good. He fastened the new box to the bottom of the cross bar he had put up a while ago. I filled it with monkey nuts and waited to see what the Squirrels thought of it.
The box has been there 3 days now and no Squirrels have been near it, they have looked at it from a distance, sniffed at it from a distance, walked round it but not gone near it. Tony say's "ungrateful little b*st*rds" or something like that!  Spot the Hedgehog went to have a look at it, sniffed at it walked round it, then went to the old box and took some nuts out of that one. I am going to leave the old one empty and see if they use the new one then or if they really don't want to!
 I think it's a pretty nut-box.

My eye's have been itching but touch wood not swelling up so the drops seem to be working. I have had a bit of lip swelling (my Bubba lip as we call it), facial swelling and hands but nothing unusual.
My next adventure is a trip to hospital to collect a piece of equipment to use over night before I attend a sleep clinic, this is to see if I stop breathing when I am asleep. (This has nothing to do with Tonys hand round my throat, before anyone asks) It is to rule out a condition called "Sleep Apnea".

Meet Junior...

The baby we have been waiting to meet made a first visit to the garden today, meet Junior Robin

 isn't he cute?

 I think he was hungry.

After Junior had eaten, Robin sent him home to bed and came for some mealworms for himself, I just wasn't quite quick enough to fill his dish so he came into the shed and just helped himself from the mealworm box.

A bit cheeky don't you think?

I guess now he knows where the box is he will be looking for it every time the dish is empty, it looks like I will have to make sure I have some mealworms in ready for him at least till Junior is feeding himself.

We had a Jay in the garden again today but I didn't get a picture, it was after the peanuts in the squirrel box. The squirrels will not be happy if the Jay starts taking the peanuts as well as the hedgehogs.

I went to the doctors on tuesday, The doctor gave me some drops and put them on repeat prescription for me. It looks like this is yet another allergy with an unknown cause that I am going to have to live with,  it may be seasonal, something similar to hay-fever but just a really bad reaction.
The drops have eased the pain now I just look like I have been punched in the face, the swelling has made my face look bruised.

Oh well that out of the way here are a couple more pictures ...

 Mrs Squirrel

 It's been a busy day.

Friendly Robins & Swollen eye's

It's been a strange few days,
My friendly Robin is now a daily visitor and thinks nothing to flying inside the shed to see what I am doing. I have been feeding him mealworms for the last few days, so when I come into the shed he stands at the side of the dish waiting for me to put some into the dish for him. At least I get some good photo's of him. He often eats some then disappears only to return after having had a bath then takes some mealworms I assume to feed his family somewhere close by!

This morning we had three squirrels in the garden, the small brown faced male, Mrs Squirrel and I think a baby. Mrs Squirrel seemed to be keeping a close eye on the baby and when she thought it was out of order the baby got a quick clip round the ear and a stream of chattering. How like humans I thought, mum's in the street today are just the same a quick clip round the ear and a load of verbal, no wonder kids are so pleasant today.

The pigeons are still trying to take over the garden, there seems to be more every day, I am going to have to find some sort of feeding tray for the floor that the small birds can get in but the pigeons cannot, it is just costing too much to feed them.

Well my eye's are at it again a couple of days ago my left eyeball decided to swell up, today both of them are swollen, I have some drops left so I am using them but in the morning I will be back at the doctors.
Just so you can see what happens have a look at these...

The white of my eye turns to jelly.

My eyeballs swell, then the skin around my eyes swells and turns red. The pain is terrible and the urge to rub is so intense it is unbearable.

Here is something more pleasant to look at...

Babies & Bretton.

I don't know about you but I will be glad when this Diamond Jubilee is finished! I know 60 years is a long time to have been on the throne, she is a good queen and all that but please can we just get back to normal and have a bit of peace.
I have seen so many union jacks to last me a lifetime, heard The National Anthem , Rule Britannia, in tune out of tune, the right words, the wrong words, Please ENOUGH.
The TV every time you turn it on it's about the Jubilee, they even took of Eastenders for it!

Mind you what will we get after it is all over and the repeats have been repeated ? We will get The Olympic Games 24/7 oh joy! I cannot wait.
Now don't get me wrong I know some people are looking forward to the Games. I am sure that thousands of people all over the country will be glued to their TV set, (unless they have managed to get a ticket and are actually there) thats fine I hope they enjoy them. What about the thousands of people that don't want to watch them have the TV companies thought about us? you can bet they haven't given us a second thought!

Well rant over I think, I feel better for that!

The garden has been quite lively, we have had a few babies on show, the squirrels have called in, the sparrowhawk has been about and killed a couple of times, next doors cat keeps trying.
Spot the hedgehog still pays nightly visits, Trot the fox calls now and again, we have not managed to get any photo's or film of Spot or Trot yet but we will Tony doesn't give up easily.
