Wakefield residents, such happy people

I have noticed a variety of faces at the car-boot sale at York racecourse on a Saturday.

There are some very strange items for sale,

and then,

You arrive home to be greeted by the happy smiling faces of the Wakefield residents.

A pleasant surprise

I have not seen any young Robins this year, usually I see two maybe three. So I thought that this year something had gone wrong, the neighbourhood cats had taken them or the Magpies, both have raided a lot of nests. However today much to my surprise what did I spot in the garden?

A juvenile Robin.

This little chap has almost grown all his red breast but is definitely one of this years young birds. I was so pleased to finally know that at least one of the robins had bred this year.

There's always something to spoil your day

While in the shed I sometimes get bothered by wasps, these are one creature I could gladly live without. I can see no purpose for them what so ever apart from making me very nervous.

This particular wasp plagued me all the time I was in the shed today no matter what I tried it would not leave me alone, my last ditched attempt was a tiny amount of lemon curd on the window ledge. Bingo the wasp sat and stayed there long enough for me to replace the window and shut it out.

Sibling rivalry in the garden

The squirrels all try to outdo each other at one time or another, I think it is a bit of sibling rivalry.
Master Squirrel was todays winner I think showing off his ability to hang off a feeder with it taking his full weight.

His ego was slightly bruised as was his bottom when he fell from the feeder moments after this photo was taken. He was not injured too badly but he did sulk for quite a while.

I am going to rant

Today we went out to do our shopping for essentials and not so essentials, I usually take a camera with me just in case I see anything worth photographing. I took a few pictures then I saw something that always annoys me so sorry but here I go.

Why the hell do people that drive mobility scooters drive them on the roads?
Why do they then drive them on the wrong side of the road?
Why do they think they have priority over every other driver on the road?
Why do they stop in stupid places so you cannot turn at a junction?
Why do they cross a road not at a crossing and expect traffic to stop for them?

They really do make me mad.

Do they have a death wish or just no brains?
(just my opinion)

The attractive starling

The starlings descended on the garden en-masse again today, they took over every  part of the garden where food had been put out. The favourite place seemed to be the small bush where the log is where I fill the hole with peanut butter.
The starlings were polite about this though, they formed a queue and waited their turn.

One of the starlings stood out as he/she seemed a slightly different colour to all the others, I think it made that particular starling very attractive.

Unusual pets

Today Tony and I looked after my grandchildren for a few hours while my eldest daughter went to York to a christening. The grandchildren have pet cats but also have pets that are a bit unusual.

My grandchildren's pet turtles.

The turtles are named after two Coronation Street characters because they are so nosey the same as the turtles. The last time I saw the turtles they were tiny things that would have fitted in one hand, now I don't think I could lift them with two hands they have grown so much.
My two grandchildren didn't get dressed all day when I asked them if they were going to get dressed they answered " no were not going anywhere, we might as well have a pyjama day" I cannot think who they take after. My grandson even said " you should have come in your pyjamas nana you would have been much more comfy" How right he was, he is definitely has his nana's gene's.

Thinking of pies

When I go down to the garden I keep looking at the blackberries growing at the side of the wall. Technically they are not growing in our garden but they are hanging over the wall into our garden. So according to law I am entitled to pick them (I think). Every time I see them I think Mmmm blackberry pie/crumble. It is getting nearer the time when I am just not going to be able to resist, I will have to pick them.

Making up for lost time

Todays photo of the day

She hasn't been around for a few day's so I think she is making up for lost time. I am guessing the babies have been keeping her busy, at least it must taste better than the bone.

Trying out a new camera

Today I tried out a different camera it is a Sony Cyber-shot  DSC-F828. I have fallen out with the Olympus cameras I was using so have been looking for something to replace them to use in the car and for in town. I think I may have found it.
This Sony takes movies as well as photos, it has macro, nightshot and infrared on it so I think I will have fun playing with it finding out just exactly what it can do.

Taken through the mirror.

I like the clear image in the mirror and the outside of the mirror shows the speed of the moving car.

I will let you know in a few days whether the camera has past the test or not.

I had to take my trousers in!

Today I went into the shed to take in the waist on a pair of my favourite cropped trousers. When I wore them a few days ago I had to keep pulling them up, I really don't know how all these "yoof's" you see walking round with their jeans round their backsides do it ! it's very uncomfortable. I had to take my trousers in by 2 inches on each side, I couldn't believe it. I am so pleased with myself, I have lost 3 1/2 inches round my waist and nearly a stone in weight in the last 6 months.  I think I deserve a treat for that. Hmm what shall I have ? I shall think about that later.

While I was in the garden I decided to have another go at the bees and butterflies. I had my Canon 50mm lens on my Canon 50D, which is a very handy lens. I waited by the lavender bush and bingo, bees and butterflies. I kept some and got rid of quite a few, so here are some I kept.

The award for the noisiest baby

I still have not seen a baby Robin this year! There are still other babies keep coming into the garden.  Usually it is the Starlings that are the noisiest, but this year I think that award goes to the Sparrows.

One less Collar Dove in the world.

There is one less collar dove in the world, one less visitor to our garden, one less bird for me to photograph.
When Tony shouted to me to bring my camera and do it quickly I knew there was something exciting happening in the garden or close by. I rushed (well if you can call my movements rushing) into the kitchen, what am I looking at? I asked Tony. He pointed out of the kitchen window in the direction of the garden I didn't see anything, then my eyes strayed a little further into the school yard (usually out of bounds). There it was The Sparrowhawk with a collar dove in its talons on the floor. It had only just taken the dove, it was still alive. The dove was moving trying to free itself from the Hawk, it never stood a chance.
The Sparrowhawk began plucking feathers from the dove before it had killed it, the bird knew it was going to die it just seemed to give in to it's fate and stopped struggling. The Sparrowhawk finally killed the dove after about 3 minutes, then began the real plucking and ripping of the dove.

Todays photo's of the day
I could not decide which to use and I have to warn you some of them are not pretty.

The photo's were taken from the kitchen and bathroom windows, across two gardens and into the school yard a distance of roughly 40 metres, I hand held my Canon 50D camera with Sigma 150 - 500mm lens, I am very pleased with the results.
The Sparrowhawk had a leisurely meal it took just over an hour, then it flew away taking the carcass with it. Thanks again to Tony I was in the right place at the right time.

Playful squirrels

The squirrels are spending a lot of time in the garden again. Rushing round playing chasing each other, then eating and burying nuts. I noticed a squirrel proof feeder has gone up on a house over the other side of the school yard, we have also heard an air rifle being fired somewhere close, which we don't know if it is being used to shoot pigeons or squirrels or just for fun.

Anyhow back to the squirrels. The smallest squirrel doesn't seem to like plums, he walks sideways with his tail in the air very slowly until he gets to them, then gives a sniff and backs off again.

Returning to the garden

A lot of the smaller birds are returning to the garden, the Long tailed tits, the greenfinches, goldfinches and the blue tits. They are flying round the garden all day long, most of them are juveniles. This one caught my eye because it looks like it has a punk haircut and a beard.

Squirrel in the garden

Squirrel is playing in the garden,

He knew it was there, it had to be near

The smell was getting stronger, he trembled with pleasure

At last he had found it, the incredible tasty peanut butter.

Mobbed by starlings

Today the garden was invaded by starlings they swooped in together in groups dropping on the feeders like swarms of bees. They gobbled up the seed, suet and mealworms.

Then just as quickly as the appeared they left,

Tony bought me a present

Tony bought me a present from York racecourse car boot sale a few weeks ago.
I was very pleased with it and it could end up saving me some money in the long run.

Tony extended the work bench in the shed so I could use my present down there. When I am in the shed and the garden is quiet and there is nothing to photograph it will give me something else to do. Isn't he just so thoughtful! I have tried my present out a couple of tomes got it just where I want it, I have to admit it is a bit heavy for lifting onto the workbench and lifting down when I have finished with it but when it gets too much for me Tony say's he will be only too happy to come and do it for me.
I think I might be spending even longer in the shed soon.

Hmm maybe that was Tony's plan all along! Anyhow if you have not already guessed I had better let you in on what it was that Tony bought me.

Todays photo of the day

A vintage Singer Hand Driven Sewing Machine.

Now isn't she a beauty.

I have complete control over her, she works at my speed, uses no electricity, and I can still keep an eye on the garden while I am using her.

Elvira says we get more like Tom & Barbara (The Good Life) every day she asked us when we are getting the chickens, well I asked the council , the computer say's NO.

I am looking forward to making things I did make some clothes before so you never know what might happen or maybe a patchwork quilt that would keep me busy Tony might have the flat to himself all winter at this rate.

A different approach

Today I decided to try a different approach in the garden, I took my Canon 28 - 105mm lens to try again at close up or Macro shots. I keep trying but never seem to get very good results.

I tried it on the bees on the lavender bush, I was quite pleased but not 100%.

I tried it on the hover fly on the ivy, hmm, not bad again, but still not 100% happy.

Then I moved further along the ivy and I found another new baby in the garden

It may not be 100% perfect but I am happy with it because it is something different that I found by trying something different.

The battle continues.

The starlings are still fighting over the food in the garden. The battles are so vicious at times there is blood drawn. I just don't understand it there is always enough food to go round.

Time for take off

The Dunnocks that visit our garden are sometimes a strange band of birds. they certainly stand out from the other birds in the garden, they are small brown and not especially noticeable or at least not usually. However our Dunnocks have something that does make them stand out in a crowd!

Things like no tails

A fashion sense all of their own

I like them to be different I like to be different myself.

We have a lot of Sparrows in the garden at the moment but it is still difficult to get them on camera. They must have found a way to move quicker since the Sparrowhawk started to be around more often.

I did however manage to catch one just as it was leaving

A busy garden

The garden was a busy place today, the most surprising appearance was the Wrens. I had wondered why I had not seen any Wrens for a while so I was pleased to see them

The juvenile looked bigger than the parent bird, it was all puffed up in excitement at being fed.

The adult Wren fed the chick then left to find more bugs to feed him/her with.

Another juvenile new to the garden is a Long Tailed Tit. There was a few of them mixed in with a group of birds flitting about the garden I managed to get a couple of half decent shots of them before they left.

The part of the day that amused me the most was when Miss Squirrel appeared. She came and sat on the bird table at the side of the shed,

She looked at me in the shed , she is not bothered now she is quite happy for me to take her picture. Miss Squirrel took something to eat from the table then jumped up on to the fence where she sat watching what I was doing.

She jumped down to the table for food then back up to the fence a few times before running down the fence and away to wherever she goes when she leaves the garden.
